Abedi was warned he could die in prison after the judge told him he “may never be released”. Family members gasped as the sentence – a record for a determinate prison term – was handed down for Abedi’s role in the largest murder case in English legal history. Abedi, born and raised in Manchester, was accused of showing “contempt” to the families of those he and his suicide bomber brother Salman Abedi killed more than three years earlier by not coming into the dock. Sentencing him on Thursday afternoon, the judge said: “Although Salman Abedi was directly responsible, it was clear the defendant took an integral part in the planning. As Abedi was aged under 21 at the time of the atrocity in May , he could not be given a whole life jail sentence. The judge – who put on record his tribute to “the tremendous dignity and courage” of the families who attended court – said the 1, days Abedi spent remanded in custody will count towards the overall sentence.

Senate judiciary committee hearing on Monday, a sign of the waning influence of police groups and unions in the debate over prison reform. The lone dissenter at the hearing, Republican Senator Jeff Sessions, raised concerns of law enforcement groups and argued on their behalf that lowering sentences would lead to higher crime rates. Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates disagreed, pointing to states that have lowered the sentences of drug offenders without seeing a spike in crime. Police groups and unions were once seen as a major obstacle to rethinking the policies that led to the United States having the highest incarceration rate in the world.

Senators who once sided with law enforcement on the issue have switched sides in recent months. Republican committee chair Charles Grassley, who once raised concerns about lowering mandatory minimum sentences, authored the bill now under consideration, the Sentencing Reform and Corrections Act.

The answer to this question will depend on the area of the country the case is being heard in and the specific court at which the hearing has taken place. In most cases a court will allocate prisoners to a prison in the local area. There are normally specific prisons that support specific courts. However it may be that on some occasions the local prison is full or that the situation of the prisoner requires they be sent to a specific institution that may be a bit further away.

For example, female prisoners from across the North West will, in the main, be taken to HMP Styal in Cheshire as it is the only female institution in the area. The solicitor handling the case should be able to tell you the name of the prison to which your loved one has been taken. If you are trying to trace a prisoner who has been in prison for some time, or someone who has been transferred to another prison, you can contact the Prisoner Location Service.

It takes about 2 weeks as the Prisoner Location Service will check that the prisoner is happy for you to know where they are before they reply. Once a prisoner has been taken back to the court cells it usually takes a bit of time before they are transferred from the court to a local prison. On arrival at the prison they will then be interviewed and logged onto the prison system. Consequently it is unlikely that you will be able to book a visit for the same day.

However it should be possible, with the exception of cases falling just prior to a weekend, to book a visit within 48 hours of a court appearance. The reception procedure ensures a prisoner has everything they need and identifies any issues such as medical conditions that may require medication, or mental health issues that may need to be addressed.

A prisoner will be allowed to keep certain items with them but anything else is labelled and stored for safe-keeping.
